Roger Wood is the most seasoned member of the
group. He began singing tenor for Nelson County High School in the All-State Chorus
in Alexandria, Virginia. After earning First Place in the state-wide
competition, he returned home singing bass following the state music
director’s recommendation after hearing Roger sing only one verse of a song. Roger attended the J.D. Sumner Quartet School in
Waxahachie, Texas, in the early 1970’s while he was a state trooper in
Abilene, Texas. That is when he met and was inspired by the famous J.D.
Sumner who made a stop by the studio to hear Roger practicing his low notes. Roger has sung with at least five different
quartet groups. For over 10 years he sang with a 25-member male choir at
Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston, Virginia. This group, The Men From
Calvary Choir, traveled to Mexico City to perform in 1992 and 1994. He was
the only bass singer in the choir. He was also a member of the quartet group
from this choir who sang in both English and Spanish for both 1992 and 1994
visits. Roger has performed individually as a country singer, and has
played the guitar, harmonica, piano and keyboard. He sings bass on the gospel
CD with the Solid Rock and believes the Lord has blessed him with a
bass voice for a good reason. Additionally,
Roger is a proud Cherokee from the Wolf Clan of the Echota Tribe and a highly
decorated US Air Force Vietnam veteran. He has one married son Zane and two
grand-daughters: Leah and Olivia Faith.. Roger is retired and lives with his wife Linda in Altavista, Virginia. Solid Rock3 |
